Regular Cruise vs. Expedition Cruise: What’s the Difference?

In the travel world, we often see trends or notice an uptick in certain destinations.  Most recently, I have noticed a bit of a spike in inquiries about Exhibition Cruises, which are a bit different from traditional cruising. Both styles are hugely popular but have fundamental difference in itineraries and activities.

This month, I thought I’d share some insights into what exhibition cruises are all about. As I mentioned, I’ve fielded a lot of requests on this topic…and that usually means others may have the same questions.

Both types of cruises are hot right now, and we are seeing some genuine values in packages from some cruise lines. If this sounds interesting, remember that I’m here to help.

Destinations

Expedition cruises take you far off the beaten path to remote destinations such as Antarctica, the Arctic, or the Galápagos Islands. These journeys focus on places that are harder to reach and rich in natural wonders. While some of these destinations may be visited on a regular cruise, expedition cruises provide a much more immersive experience.

Purpose & Experience

The goal of an expedition cruise is exploration and discovery. Every stop—or “landing”—is about engaging with the natural environment. You’ll join expert guides on adventures like glacier hikes, kayaking, zodiac boat landings, wildlife viewing, or even snorkeling with penguins in the Galápagos. Some lines even offer unique options like submarine excursions.

Onboard Atmosphere

Expedition ships are much smaller, often carrying fewer than 200 guests. This creates a more intimate atmosphere and allows for access to places larger ships simply can’t go. Onboard, you’ll find lectures from naturalists, scientists, and historians who bring the destination to life. Some ships even include dedicated scientific spaces for passengers to explore.

Cost & Value

Because of their remote destinations, smaller ships, and highly trained staff, expedition cruises are more expensive than traditional cruises. However, they’re an investment in a once-in-a-lifetime experience that prioritizes learning, exploration, and adventure.

Who It’s For

If your idea of travel means setting foot on untouched landscapes, encountering rare wildlife, and fully immersing yourself in nature, then an expedition cruise may be just what you’re looking for. When you’re ready to take the next step, I’d love to help design the perfect journey for you.
