Discover Scotland: History, Highlands & Hidden Gems
I’ve started planning for a 2027 Scotland group trip, and the more I research, the more I realize how much this remarkable country has to offer. From legendary golf courses and ancient castles to misty islands and cinematic landscapes, Scotland blends tradition with unexpected experiences that make it ideal for curious travelers.
Below is a preview of what makes Scotland such an unforgettable destination.
National Parks & Islands: Scotland’s Wild Beauty
Scotland is home to two breathtaking national parks and roughly 93 inhabited islands (plus hundreds more uninhabited), making it a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts.
o Cairngorms National Park - the largest national park in the United Kingdom, Cairngorms offers a true Highland experience. Unlike many parks, Cairngorms is occupied with residents so there are charming towns, whiskey distilleries and historic sites in addition to mountain trails and scenic swimming spots. It’s the perfect blend of nature, culture, and local life.
o Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park is a short drive from Glascow and is also located in the Highlands. It offers lochs, forests and rugged peaks for hiking and boating and even has 2 waterfalls.
o Isle of Skye - one of Scotland’s most beloved islands, Skye is famed for its dramatic volcanic landscapes, fairy pools, and medieval castles. Expect misty weather and pack rain gear—but the moody atmosphere is part of the magic.
Golfing in the Home of the Game
While many travelers know about golf at St Andrews Links, Scotland’s golf scene is far broader. The country boasts 550–600 courses, the highest concentration per capita in the world.
Options range from historic championship courses to scenic and affordable local links, making Scotland a dream destination for golfers of all skill levels.
Castles: Sleep Like Royalty
Scotland is home to 2,000–3,000 castle sites, with about 1,500 still standing today. These range from grand residences to atmospheric ruins perched on cliffs and hillsides.
One standout experience is the Aberdeenshire Castle Trail, a 229-mile route showcasing more than a dozen castles. It’s a fantastic way to immerse yourself in Scotland’s noble past—and yes, some castles even offer overnight stays for a truly unforgettable experience.
Film & TV Locations: Step Into the Story
Scotland’s dramatic scenery and historic settings have made it a star in its own right on screen. Travelers can visit real-life locations from beloved productions such as:
Outlander
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and the wider series
Skyfall
Braveheart
From Highland glens and ancient ruins to picturesque towns, screen tourism allows visitors to step into cinematic worlds while discovering Scotland’s culture and history.
Whether you’re drawn by golf, history, landscapes, or film locations, Scotland offers a rare combination of rugged beauty and rich heritage. It’s a destination where you can hike through a national park in the morning, explore a medieval castle in the afternoon, and enjoy a dram of whiskey by a fireside in the evening.
