Escape the Crowds: Alternative European Destinations to Consider

European travel is booming, and there’s no sign of it slowing down. With overtourism creating real challenges for local communities, many travelers are looking for ways to experience Europe more thoughtfully—and with fewer crowds. If Europe is still on your travel wish list (no judgment here!), consider visiting during the off-season or exploring lesser-known destinations within your favorite countries. Here are a few inspiring alternatives:

🇮🇹 Italy: Discover Ischia Instead of the Amalfi Coast

If you’ve already experienced the Amalfi Coast or want a more tranquil escape, Ischia is a wonderful alternative. This lush volcanic island in the Gulf of Naples is famed for its therapeutic thermal waters, beautiful beaches, and relaxed wellness atmosphere. Celebrated since Roman times for its healing springs, Ischia offers thermal parks, natural hot springs, and charming seaside towns set amid stunning Mediterranean scenery. Visitors can unwind in renowned thermal gardens, soak in natural pools where hot springs meet the sea and explore landscapes rich in medicinal plants and mineral-rich waters. With easy ferry access from Naples (about one hour), Ischia blends relaxation, culture, and natural beauty into a rejuvenating retreat.

Sean and I loved the Amalfi Coast but would add Ischia to our list if we ever went back for a more serene experience.

🇬🇷 Greece: Look Beyond Mykonos and Santorini

Did you know there are thousands of Greek islands, yet only about 227 are inhabited? While Mykonos and Santorini often dominate the spotlight, there are countless other islands waiting to be explored. Travel experts have highlighted several Greek islands to visit including both well-known favorites and lesser-known gems that offer a more relaxed and authentic experience.

Each island delivers a distinct beach landscape—from volcanic black-sand shores and dramatic cliff-backed coves to secluded sandy stretches and crystal-clear turquoise waters. Whether you’re seeking vibrant nightlife, quiet fishing villages, or unspoiled nature, Greece truly offers something for every travel style.

If choosing just one island feels overwhelming, cruising is an excellent way to experience multiple destinations in one trip. Greek-based cruise line, Celestyal Cruises, visits remarkable ports including Rhodes, Crete, and Milos—places many travelers might not otherwise discover.  I’m sending a group on Celestyal Cruises in April and I’m going with my family in September.  I’m really looking forward to experiencing a variety of Greek islands.

With its incredible diversity, Greece has an island to match every preference, making it an ideal destination for both first-time visitors and seasoned travelers looking for something new.

🇵🇹 Portugal: Unwind in Comporta

For a relaxed beach escape away from Lisbon’s energy, Comporta—located in Portugal’s Alentejo region—offers a chic yet laid-back coastal retreat. Often called the “Hamptons of Portugal,” it combines unspoiled natural beauty with stylish accommodations. Expect miles of pristine beaches, sweeping dunes, and wildlife-rich wetlands in the Sado Estuary Natural Reserve, where dolphins and flamingos can be spotted. Visitors can enjoy surfing, horseback riding through rice paddies, cycling scenic trails, or savoring fresh seafood at elegant beach clubs.

🇧🇪 Belgium: Experience the Renaissance of Brussels

Often overlooked in favor of Europe’s larger capitals, Brussels is experiencing a vibrant cultural revival. The city boasts the UNESCO-listed Grand-Place, renowned for its ornate 17th-century guildhalls, and is a hub for Art Nouveau architecture, highlighted by the work of Victor Horta. Art lovers can explore world-class museums, while food enthusiasts will delight in Belgian chocolate, moules-frites, crisp frites, and an exceptional beer scene anchored by historic cafés. Walkable neighborhoods offer antique shops, markets, and lively nightlife.  Brussels is a great alternative to consider if you are looking for a new European city to visit.

🇪🇸 Spain: Discover Authentic Spain in Asturias

As Barcelona and Madrid grow increasingly crowded, Asturias—tucked along Spain’s lush northern coast—offers a peaceful and authentic alternative. Known as part of “Green Spain,” the region features dramatic coastal landscapes, historic pilgrimage routes, thermal spas, and mountain retreats set against the stunning Picos de Europa Mountain Range. Asturias is also a culinary powerhouse, boasting numerous Michelin-starred restaurants and deep-rooted cheese- and cider-making traditions. Rich in culture and natural beauty, it remains a hidden gem for travelers seeking authenticity and world-class gastronomy.

Sean and I really enjoyed going to Barcelona and Madrid but Barcelona was especially busy.  Asturias sounds like a fun, immersive alternative for a future trip.

Final Thoughts

Traveling more intentionally—whether by choosing quieter destinations or visiting during shoulder and off-seasons—allows you to enjoy Europe’s beauty while supporting sustainable tourism. If you’re ready to explore beyond the usual hotspots, these destinations offer unforgettable experiences without the overwhelming crowds.  I’d be happy to help you navigate your vacation plans.
